Tim Rogers led a bicycle tour of some of Santa Fe’s roads and trails for participants in a “Complete Streets” event organized by the New Mexico Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects on Feb. 11, 2015.

The ride started at the Roundhouse, proceeded to Second Street Brewery for lunch, and finished at the offices of the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization in the Railyard, where participants heard presentations by Richard MacPherson of City of Santa Fe Long-Range Planning on St. Michael’s Dr. make-over concepts, Mr. Rogers on the Active Transportation Toolkit he created on behalf of the New Mexico Dept. of Health’s Healthy Kids New Mexico program, and Chrissy Scarpitti of  Surroundings on a re-design underway for the Sheridan Downtown Transit Center.

The bike tour had over 25 participants, most of whom were provided with bicycles by “Route Rentals and Tours” of Albuquerque.  During the tour, Mr. Rogers provided planning and design background and observations on successes and continuing challenges to make Santa Fe a more bicycle-friendly city, drawing from his experience creating the Santa Fe Metropolitan Bicycle Master Plan.  The ride included visits to Santa Fe’s first and only true bike lane “retrofit” on Don Gaspar Ave., our city’s first “road diet” (reduction in number of travel lanes) on Cordova Rd., calm and easy riding on Alta Vista St., our busiest urban trail segment on the Rail Trail, shared lane arrows (“sharrows”) and striped shoulders on 2nd St., Ashbaugh Park trails, and the Acequia Trail and Bikeway back up to the Railyard (see map below).
